Outstanding Debut BAFTA goes to Rungano Nyoni

Rungano Nyoni won the BAFTA award for best Outstanding Debut for the movie I Am Not a Witch. A film about a young girl, Shula, being accused and found guilty of witch crafting. Shula is forced to make a decision about her life. Either she accepts her verdict or fights for her freedom.

As Rungano stood on stage speechless with a BAFTA in her hands. She started to thank the people closest to her and everyone who made the film possible. A very touching moment came when the camera was focused on the Zambian directors’ mother. Clinging to her face to manage her emotions.

Rungano started her career as a director debuting in 2009 with her short film The List. Earning her a Welsh BAFTA award for Best Short Film. Her second short film Mwansa the Great even earned her an African Movie Academy Award nomination.
